Lineage 2: Prelude

Release date: April 2004
Genre: MMORPG
Developer: NCsoft
Version: Lineage II The Prelude
<Previous chapters omitted> ... We remember that year—the year shortly before the dawn of a new century, the first year of the Age of Chaos. At the time, it seemed no different from any other year recorded in history, merely a “prelude” to the calamity that would come upon us. We could not prepare, and we did not know what to expect.
In Aden, the kingdom of Humans, priests of the god of light gathered in the magnificent Temple of Oren. Each of them said he had seen an ominous future in a nightmare. Some claimed it was a revelation from the gods; others believed it was the work of evil spirits. But all were troubled by the same thing: a sense of helplessness. To overcome this fear, the Council decided to restore the trust between the races that had been shattered long ago, and sent a messenger to each race’s supreme ruler.
In a forest shimmering with emerald light, the Elves were horrified to learn that the Tree of Peace, mother of all forests, had begun to die. The beautiful forest people lifted the veil that had long concealed them beyond their borders and sent many young Elves to the human kingdom in search of a way to save the great tree.
Clearly, they had discovered this too late. There was no doubt that someone among the Dark Elves already knew the truth—a truth that had previously been spoken only in whispers, a secret surrounding their goddess. As soon as the human priests assembled at Oren Castle, their faces revealed that they, too, had received a warning: “The Age of Darkness is coming.”
The fearless Orcs paid little attention to the approaching winter, unaware that spring would never follow it. Pa’agrio, the lord of the Orcs, Kakai, sent messengers to gather the scattered Orcs before the Eternal Winter.
It is unclear what the Dwarves were doing during all this time. Some believed they simply carried on with their business, entirely unaware of the unfolding crisis. But that would underestimate their talent for trade. It is only speculation, yet the people of the earth, guardians of the Titans’ forgotten knowledge, may have unearthed the Tablet of Maphr, which had concealed traces of an ancient civilization for thousands of years, and perhaps studied the principles of absolute geometry.
Now, in the year of the “Prelude,” no one remembers the names of the brave warriors from every race who joined forces. Though they had once been enemies, they fought courageously against the despair that swept over them. These heroes won many small victories, even as they struggled beneath the shadow of the grim fate awaiting them.
